In the early 1960s, young student Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) devotes himself to theoretical physics and studies this subject at Oxford University, where he is completing his doctorate. When he meets the beautiful and devout Jane (Felicity Jones) at a student party, he is smitten. After some initial hesitation, Jane embarks on a love affair with the student. But their young happiness is abruptly disrupted when Stephen realizes that he is increasingly losing control of his motor skills.

Finally, he receives a medical diagnosis: he suffers from ALS, a degenerative nerve disease in which the cells responsible for controlling the muscles are destroyed. His life expectancy: two years. It is Jane who gives him all her love and support and prevents Stephen from becoming severely depressed. But while his professional success increases, the disease weakens him more and more...
